One colour that is…
Well we made a little bit more progress on the deck remodel so I figured I’d share that today. We blasted the old part of the deck with a power sprayer to clean it as best we could and now the whole thing has been stained.
So here’s what it looked like before…
And now it looks like this!
Ahhh much better no? While you can still see it’s an extension, it’s not quite as obvious as it was before with the dark stain masking the old and now marrying it much better with the new boards and the old boards are looking so much healthier!
There’s a very slight difference in the colouring but I reckon once there’s furniture on it and it’s actually completed, it won’t be terribly noticeable.
So what’s left? Oh PLENTY!! One thing I had been considering was staining those two fencing panels that actually meet the deck but wanted to wait until we stained the rest to see if it was necessary.
I think you can see from these pictures that YES they now look like they are about 40 years old (they aren’t, they were put in about 3 years ago, they are just really faded and looking a bit worse for wear). One more job for the list then!
Stay tuned for more soon ;)
Why dont you paint all of the fence panels a pretty white or blue colour or something?
Originally the fence panels were a greeny colour and I got tired of it really quickly! I think just keeping everything neutral and tying it with the deck will look a bit more uniform and then we'll add lots of colour and contrast with furnishings/accessories :)
It is looking great and I'm sure that once it is finished no-one will notice the slight colour difference.
The difference is actually more noticeable in the pictures than it is in 'real life' so I've got my fingers crossed that it'll look fine once it's finished ;) xx
It looks so much better! I'm sure once you've added pretty furniture and accessories no-one will notice the differences xxx
It's gorgeous!
Sorry if this is a duplicate question, it didn't show my original one as posting!

You may have already addressed this and I missed it, but why didn't you continue the new deck platform along the side of the house to the window behind the potted tree? I can't tell completely, but it looks like you would have to do another step down there? It looks great though! Love the
Good question and no, I hadn't answered it before :) A few reasons really – we store our bins at that side and so we'd have no where else to put them (I didn't really want to incorporate 4 large bins in the design – ha!); the basement window (the only natural light the 'man cave' receives) would have been blocked by the decking; the old stairs from where the back door used to
Oh man, this nicely marries the new and old decking together. I'm still going to go on a bit about the way you added onto the deck, if you don't mind; it really makes a feature of the space and adds a quirky little element and almost a mini subtle focal point to the deck.

I also really like the stain that dark. Yep. Well played. Will the fence that you install be the same
I love your deck extension. It looks really great.

I also looked back at the process post and wanted to suggest you could just extend the step (to the yard) the entire width of the deck. Then you'd have plenty of places to put lovely pots and no need for a rail.
