So as I said in my last post, I’m in the midst of a little refresh (mini-makeover) of my dressing room. Nothing massive, just a few things getting updated and swapped out.
One thing I really wanted to do was change out the light fixture from my girlie pink chandelier to something brassy and cool. I know my crazy chandelier wasn’t to everyone’s taste but I did love how unabashedly feminine it was so it’s not a change of heart here, just that it’s pretty in-your-face and I’m going for something a little subtler and more sophisticated (well, subtle and sophisticated for ME anyway).
As much as I would have loved something really grand and statement-making, my bank account just won’t allow for the splurge right now. I have an office/guest bedroom remodel that’s taking up my cash flow right now and as this is just a refresh, I couldn’t justify it.
So, in a moment of impulsiveness, I drove to B&Q, picked up this lamp for Β£80, got home and spray painted it gold. Nothing like committing to an idea that came into your head 30 minutes before. Ahem.
The following day once the spray paint was dry, Wayne swapped the pink chandy for this one.
The rest of the room is still in chaos but I’m pretty happy with my first little change.
We realised it was slightly off centre after we hung it and put the ladder and tools away. Crap. At that point, I’d already begged Wayne to hang it for me and sometimes, you know when you can’t really push it too far. So, it’s slightly off. I don’t think it’s the end of the world and perhaps when we next have the ladder out, we’ll fix it but for now, I’m not that fussed.
Here’s a little before and after action…
I like the fact that it’s a little bit lighter visually speaking and it doesn’t hang quite as low as my girlie pink number.
And from below and at night, it looks a little like this (from Instagram!)
Next up… the chest of drawers. I’ve made a decision on that one and I’m running with it.
Stay tuned to see what I decided.
What do you think of the change in the light? Better? Worse? Would it being slightly off-centre do your head in? Ever get to the point where you can’t really ask your other half to just do one more little thing?
Love a sputnik! And of course it is even better gold :)
Nice upgrade , although I liked it before, too . The off-centredness would drive me mad though!
Haha! If you had seen Wayne's face that day, trust me, I wasn't going to make an issue over it ;) It will do my head in and it will be fixed but for now, I'm just happy it's up! ;) xxx
I think the new light is better – it works so well with the room, I love it! The spray-paint worked wonders. The "off-centre-ness" would annoy me, but I'd have done the same as you in that situation. It would be in my head until the next time the ladder is out, though – then I'd pounce and get it straightened! (And if he wasn't keen then, maybe some dramatic comments
Love the new pendant light and the gold really makes it look more expensive….a great buy! Sharon
I've pushed that button on the hubs before so I have a few off center lights around the joint myself. :) It looks so glam and fab my dear!!
It's good to know I'm not alone in the 'know when to hold 'em and know when to fold 'em' mentality when it comes to the other half ;) xxx
Gorgeous! And a great price. I love it, of course. :)
Definitely an improvement.
I like them both. I think the gold has a slight edge. Its cool xx.
i like them both but definitely different styles. the new one is so cool and a good contrast to the girly elements. love it!
Love it! I want one!
I think it looks stunning – I am a DIY novice but this I find inspiring! Can you share which spray paint you used – Rustoleum? which one? thanks!
I used Montana Gold Gold Chrome – a favourite of mine! Just be careful after spraying, I find I have to leave mine much longer than what it says on the tin to avoid any smudges (normally around 24 hours) ;) xx
I like both.

Gold might be a bit more sophisticated.
I love this! The gold is gorgeous, can't wait to see what you get up to next :-)
I love it!!!! You have no idea how much I've been wanting a sputnik if possible an Emil Stejnar one, yeah I know that one won't happen. While in Germany now I have been looking everywhere and no luck. Love yours, do you think it would fit in a suitcase ;) ?
Ha! I know, I've wanted one forever as well but this was the only find in my budget ;) Probably not unless you have a pretty big suitcase as it comes fully assembled except for the bulbs ;) xxx
Hello Kimberley, I've been reading your blog ever since Joanna mentioned it in her blogpost about her book (my home is also in it!), and I thought I'd just say hello! I love your home, I love everything you have made in it, and your dining room with that unique wall full of paintings and I love the colours and the wallpapers you use (and I'm seriously jealous about your drinks tray!
Hi Ninette! Aww that's so cool – yes of course, yours was the home with the clipper tea box 'wallpaper'!! So amazing and inspiring! I love your home and your fearless use of colour, it's just stunning and so much fun. I'm so pleased you found me because now I've found you too! Yay! Definitely a win/win :) xxx
I think the sputnik one is more you but I do love the chandelier. What are you going to do with it now it's been retired? xxx
I haven't decided yet – I might just sell it or give it away (I have so many things I keep saying that about and then they get stuffed in the loft!) ;) xxx
I love the chandelier but I like the new one too, especially now it's had a gold make over. Will you be putting the chandelier somewhere else?

As for pushing buttons, I really pushed my husband's the day I decided to move our front room round then changed my mind and we moved it all back. Not normally an issue but it involved moving the piano, which is a standard sized upright
That light = HEAVEN! Oh I love how precisely chaotic it is. And in gold. Well played. And it's actually hurting my brain a little bit at how symmetrical it is from below. Stunning. Cannot wait to see MOAR renovation updates xx
Hey Kimberly, I love your blog and have found it really inspiring when planning the rooms in my first home. Can you tell me where you purchased your gold spray paint please? I've tried something similar and the paint is a yucky orange colour, not gold and metallic like yours. Help!
Hi Lee! Thank you!! I always recommend Montana Gold Gold Chrome – do a search on line for it, there are quite a few sites that sell it! (it's what I used on this piece and countless others) :) x
