Long before the KonMari Method of tidying exploded on the scene, William Morris actually gave us a famously succinct rule that essentially encapsulated the entire ethos of her book. He said, “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.”

Well, what if we can have both? Items in the home that serve an entirely practical function but look pretty fantastic whilst doing so? Today, I am sharing something that does just that.

(Excuse the pyjama reflection – it was Saturday morning when I took that shot! Ha!)

As you know, I’m a gold girl. I love its warmth, its reflective style, its touch of glamour. I’ve loved gold and brass for probably around 5 years now, long before it became as trendy as it is today and will probably continue to love it even after it fades out of the limelight (although I’m hopeful that won’t be for some time). So when I spotted a beautiful gold cheese grater on Object Style’s newsletter, I knew I had to have it.

I tweeted my find (as I do at times – Are you following me on Twitter? Go on then.) and one of my very favourite shops of all time – MiaFleur – acknowledged they had the rest of the set on their site. Goodness me. I was in love.

Gold serving spoons, whisks, sieves, ladles and slotted spatulas – the things my kitchen dreams are made of. I shouldn’t have been surprised, to be honest. I think the ladies of MiaFleur are as in love with golds and brass as much as I am and their wares just never disappoint. I kind of want to live in their online shop. They are THAT good at choosing just the right items to pull into their amazing store. When they offered to send me the set to review here on the blog, I think I might have done a few fist pumps and a Carlton dance. (<– go on click that link, you know you want to.)

It was as though these gold utensils were just made for my kitchen. Of course, there is still work to be done in our kitchen – I despise our worktops and there’s a whole host of things wrong that I want to sort out this year and intend to once the dining room remodel is completed. But even at this stage, the kitchen looks pretty fab with these glowing beauties hanging from beneath the shelving.

And yes, I have been using them to cook and so far, so good. They haven’t scratched or faded but I do know from experience that you don’t want to scrub these harshly, leave them soaking for any length of time in water and you’ll want to hand wash and dry them (ie, don’t put these in the dishwasher!). So pretty here comes with a small price. Is it worth the tiny bit of extra effort? It is for me when breakfast is this beautiful.

You might also remember from quite some time ago that I was really hating the makeshift gallery wall on the other side of the kitchen so I used a few pieces I had left over from removing the gallery in the dining room and created something that looked a little nicer. The larger sieves are now hanging there and I’m feeling a little better about this wall now!

Oh and I just wanted to share quickly a tiny little DIY I did.

We have had a little note paper block in that corner for ages which I’d received as a gift from a local company. It had their logo splashed all over it and I always took it out when I shot the kitchen for the blog because it was kind of ugly… buuuut it was entirely practical because I always jotted down my shopping list on it.

So keeping with the theme of ‘beautiful and useful’ I decided to finally give it a little makeover. I simply covered the outside with gold and white marble contact paper*Β to make it a little prettier. I quite like how it came out.

It was super easy too – I just traced each side on to the back of the sticky back paper, cut it out, removed the backing and stuck it on!

Ahh much better.

So if you are looking for something gorgeous to display in your kitchen that’s not only totally useful but also looks stunning, then you really must check out the full set over on MiaFleur.

I’d love to replace the silver and black utensils I have hanging there at some point but for now, well, I use those items nearly every day when cooking so they are very much more for practicality than pretty. But for now, the gold serving utensils are getting pride of place.
